Summary: Stella fancied herself in love with the poet Hoffmann, but Lindorf would be going home with her.
His bribery successful, Lindorf opened and read Stella’s letter without hesitation. He chuckled sardonically. Stella fancied herself in love with Hoffmann, who doubtless sent her letters full of poetic effusions and as much nonsense as an opera libretto.
Lindorf was no poet; he could not write verses or mimic a young lover’s sighs and languishments, and he would make himself absurd if he tried. But no matter! He was well aware he had a certain magnetism; and more than that, he knew how to seize an opportunity. Stella would be his—and let Hoffmann the poet drink himself into oblivion.
