The seventeen steps seemed seven too many.
“Welcome home,” said Sherlock softly when John finally reached the sitting room.
John was genuinely surprised at the greeting.
“Uh, hullo.”
“You look done in.”
“Double shift. Half the hospital staff is out.”
“Hungry?”
“Uh,” John considered, “yeah, but I don’t think I could manage a curry.”
“Tea and toast?”
“You, uh, offering?”
“Yup. I’ll even throw in a scrambled egg or two.”
“Are you certain?”
“Would you rather I clap for you in the street?”
“Uh, no, thanks. Scramble me an egg,” said John, smiling, “and that’ll be just fine.”
“Tea, too.”
