Nick wanted to deny it, wanted desperately to protect Natalie by refusing to admit his feelings.
"I knew it," Janette said, before he could find the words, with Janette's tone taking on that insufferable all-knowing lilt. "I knew if I said it, you would give yourself away, my poor tormented Nicholas.
"Your emotions torture you even in the things that should be a pleasure these nights." She tisked at him. "You used to embrace such things."
"Long ago, and … I will not endanger her," Nick avowed, half a plea, half a threat.
Janette merely smiled.
