Title: Counting Steps on the Road to Hell
Author: Zdenka
Fandom: Lone Wolf and Cub (manga)
Rating: T
Characters: Ogami Itto & Daigoro
Challenge: #331 - lone wolf
Warnings: spoilers for volume 22; mentions of violence, assassinations, and canon-typical child endangerment.
Notes: tōtekirai: Hand-thrown explosives. A primitive hand grenade. (from the glossary in LW&C volume 22)
Summary: Ogami Itto makes Daigoro practice counting.
“One, two,” Daigoro begins, counting on his small fingers.
It is not so he can count coins; the child knows only that gold is earned with blood, by taking human life.
“Three, four . . .”
In his short life, Daigoro has never held a writing-brush; he cannot read even his own name. What use, to those who walk the path of hell?
But he must learn this one thing. Light the tōtekirai, throw it on the count of six. Only so can father and son enter battle together.
“Nine, ten!” Daigoro finishes triumphantly.
“Again,” his father says, and continues cleaning his sword.
