Round #70 – Amnesty Week: Written for 51: Shakespeare II: "For which of my bad parts didst thou first fall in love with me?"
Rating: G
Notes: It has been so long since I tried to write a drabble. It's ridiculous how hard it is to keep it down to 100 words.

Gregory Lestrade is a terrible timekeeper. He's fifteen minutes late to everything. If someone sneaks in late to the department-wide meeting, slouching up the back and hiding from the Commissioner, it's Gregory.

When Gregory ends the stalemate of appreciative glances and asks him to dinner, Mycroft knows he will be late without meaning anything by it. It's simply who he is.

Mycroft walks into the restaurant at precisely 8pm, because punctuality is as much a part of his character as tardiness is part of Gregory's. He's unexpectedly pleased to find Gregory already sitting at a table, toying with a breadstick.

He soft-foots through the study, hands carefully clear of the shelves. Flotsam and jetsam. A whispering block of red stone; a tiny metal heart; a jar of lurid green. The creature inside holds his gaze a moment, then disdainfully turns inside out.

“What is it, boy?” the captain says, at their desk. “Is it still ‘boy’?”

Could, but doesn’t: how long gone this time?

Could, but doesn’t: you’d know if you were ever-

Does: “Da has dinner ready. Will you be down?”

The lamp is dim, making a shadow of the hunching shape bent over worn charts. “In a while.”

Prompt 14 - Fairy Tale

Adam was sitting at the kitchen table whilst Lucas grilled some sausages for them.

“I’m very grateful you arrived when you did,” Adam said.  “You must be my fairy godmother.”

“I hardly think sausage and mash in my tiny kitchen equates to going to the ball.”

“But good fairy, you said there would be baked beans as well.”

Lucas laughed.  “Indeed, Cinders, you shall have baked beans.  Although I still think I’m more like a frog waiting to be kissed by a handsome prince.”

He was surprised, but thrilled when Adam winked and said, “Maybe we should test that out.”
